cupboard

lemons dare and hope defeated
handle with care and soon retreated
the usual, then? we got you now
the freshest brew, so often not found

his voice pushes, urges me to see
he smiles and looks and I pretend not to see
you pretend you're flirting with countless others
you show much interest so they feel non-smothered

we smile together, we create the dream
the hint of impossible but tracing the seam
the little knit that keeps us drawn
the winding bit that dangles at dawn

I see you glancing, I feel your heat
I'm not sorry, I won't retreat

we dance past, hold back the truth
we hope for love as we leave the roost
smirking some and winking at few
getting caught up in rhythms of blue

liquor dreams, sanctioned off well
homely encounters meant to dwell

I hope we dance and I hope we compete
until that day, I'm doomed to repeat
